Once your child completes the Jr. Samurais course, they should start over and do it again until they feel they are executing all the techniques accurately and with confidence and conviction. Only then, we will move them on to the Samurai Master curriculum, regardless of their age. As long as they are learning and having fun, we will keep them going, however, if it becomes overwhelming we will make sure to pull back. In other words, a student can and will be moved back to Little Samurais (ages 4-7), if our dojo staff determines that the new Jr. Samurais class is too overwhelming.

This class is mainly designed for teenagers on the path to mastery of the art of Jiu-Jitsu. We also invite children who excel in the Jr. Samurais program to join the Samurai Master class when they are ready. This is our most advanced youth Jiu-Jitsu program and joining the Samurai Master class is the highest honor for any youth Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. Youth in this program possess all the traits necessary for success on the path to black belt: skills, discipline, respect, courage, leadership, loyalty, and compassion. In this class, students will also learn how to safely apply submissions (joint locks, chokeholds, etc.), as well defend against them, all under careful supervision.

Tuesday & Thursday 6:00-7:00 PM
This MMA/Self-defence class will be your early introduction to Jiu-Jitsu with strikes! This class could give you the necessary tools to survive, during a real street confrontation/attack.
At Kikunaga dojo we allow students to learn the art of Jiu-Jitsu as a complete fighting system, not just as a sport through group lessons. Since sparring with strikes (punches and kicks) training is the core centre of this class, only adults and selected youth over the age of 13 are eligible to attend this course. MMA gloves, mouthguard and shin pads are required to attend this class. This is a very friendly beginners' MMA/self-defence introductory class. You will be training in a very friendly, fun, safe and controlled environment. This class is NOT catered to seasoned MMA fighters.
Although the sportive practice of the art does not include punches or kicks, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a complete system of self-defense that includes what the Japanese call atemi or striking techniques. This the perfect blend of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (modern Jiu-jitsu) and Koryu Jujutsu (old-school traditional jujutsu). The difference between the atemi we use and those used in other martial arts, such as Karate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing and Muay Thai, is that we only use atemi when there is little or no chance that the opponent can strike back. In other words, we don’t take risks by trading punches or kicks with our opponent, instead, we use atemi to set up other more reliable means of victory. Once a student graduates from the beginners's Jiu-Jitsu course, we will cover atemi while standing as well as the most effective striking strategies from each newaza position or what we call ground techniques. However, to learn how to properly use atemi techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, students must first learn the techniques and distance-control principles that will keep you safe from your opponent’s punches, kicks, knees and elbows.
BULLYING REMAINS A SERIOUS MATTER IN CANADA and the statistics don't lie:
• 47% of Canadian parents have at least one child that has been a victim of bullying
• Around one-third of the population has experienced bullying as a child.
• Around one-third of teenagers have been bullied recently.
At Kikunaga dojo we make sure to prepare youth against bullying by teaching them Jiu-Jitsu and essential survival skills that could potentially save their lives if ever physically attacked.
In order to become proficient in self-preservation, students must train Jiu-Jitsu as a complete martial art, meaning they must constantly train against strikes and get used to worst case scenarios, for example, being on the bottom of a fight against a stronger and bigger attacker.
At Kikunaga dojo, all students practice in a way that a small person can survive against a bigger and stronger opponent by simply using Jiu-Jitsu techniques correctly.
Once your child completes the Jr. Samurais course (ages 8-11) they should start over and do it again until we feel they are executing all the techniques accurately and with confidence and conviction. Only then, we will move them on to the Samurai Master program (Teens & Adults), regardless of what their age is. For instance, if your child starts at 5 years old and flies through the Little Samurais course (ages 5-9) and Jr. Samurais by the time they are 10 years old (which means they are a very fast learner and mature enough to understand the art of Jiu-Jitsu), we will not hesitate to promote them into the Samurai Master curriculum. As long as they are learning and having fun, we will keep them going, however, if it becomes overwhelming we will make sure to pull back. It should be noted that, although some kids will learn faster than others, no child is too mature for the games we play at Little Samurais.
Yes, Jiu-Jitsu is a complete martial art that covers both gi and no-gi techniques. The advantage of no-gi training is that you are forced to sharpen your offensive skills to a very high level, since you don’t have the gi cloth material to assist you in your control and submission attempts. However, the advantage of training with the gi is that you are forced to sharpen your defensive skills since your opponent will have more options of attack against you, such as more upper and lower body control, sweeps, gi chokes, etc. The disadvantage of training exclusively with the gi on is that you become reliant on it. The disadvantage of training no-gi is that you become too comfortable with the limited control your opponent has over you in training, and one day, if you get in a street fight with someone who grabs your jacket or pants during the chaos, your unfamiliarity with their increased level of control will cause you to panic. Bottom line, a true martial artist success in a fight cannot be determined by what you are, or aren’t, wearing, and for this reason one must become proficient in both gi and no-gi techniques. For instance, at the dojo, during spring and summer months, our students will train no-gi and during fall and winter months, they will train in a gi, that way they will get to experience the best of both worlds!
All lessons will be tracked in the Jiu-Jitsu class attendance system we have. After approximately 15 classes (or more) your child attends and based on skills, we will award your child one stripe on his/her belt. Once they earn four stripes on their belt, your child will be qualified to test for the next belt.
Once your child has earned four stripes on a particular belt, they qualify to test for promotion to the next belt level. The test will be evaluated by a Kikunaga Dojo instructor to determine whether or not your child’s performance meets the dojo' standards. There is a $50 evaluation/processing fee for a belt test. If your child passes the test, we will award their official belt and promotion certificate. If your child does not pass the test, a new date for re-testing will be rescheduled, and you will not be charged again.
Absolutely. Not only kids, but any person of any age with low self-esteem often come out of their shells when practicing the art of Jujutsu. As the student's skill level increases, they feel more and more confident. When it comes to kids, other kids look up to them, just as they look up to other kids who are ahead of them. It builds a sense of confidence, pride, and teamwork.
Two words. Kikunaga is our family name originated in Kyushu, Japan, the region of the samurai. A dōjō (道場), is a hall or place for immersive learning or meditation. This is traditionally in the field of martial arts, but can also be used in other fields, such as meditation and worship temples. The term roughly means "place of the Way" or ''place of Enlightenment'' in Japanese. For many years, the word dōjō has been mistakely translated in the west as ''club'' or ''school''. Kikunaga Dojo was created with the main goal of creating a safe and peaceful environment where people can improve themselves and help improve others.
If you have questions about the opportunities available to you or your child in our Jiu-Jitsu programs, send us a message. We will get back to you as soon as possible!
